Council approves Opera House renovation plan

The Abbeville Opera House is seeing some action this year, although not all of it is on stage.

Given the threat of the coronavirus pandemic, performances at Abbeville's grand old community theater are in something of a holding pattern.

"We are continuing to evaluate the situation with COVID and the regulations from the state," said Mike Clary, the City's Community Development Director.

"At this time, there are no plans to have performances until at least late October. However, that is subject to change as the situation continues to evolve," he said. "We also have the ongoing renovations, which are another factor."

For example, Abbeville City Council is moving ahead with Phase III Cornice Installation and Opera House Roof Repair.

The project scope will include demolition, carpentry, masonry, and metal work.

The only bid that came in was that of Lloyd Roofing with a total of $78,800.

The funding for the project will come from the City's Hospitality Fund.

City Council approved at its Sept. 8 meeting the bid from Lloyd Roofing for $78,800, as the lowest and best bid for the Phase III Cornice Installation and Opera House Roof Repair project.
