Don't even think about laboring on Labor Day!

Labor Day is coming up on Monday, Sept. 7, and Abbeville County residents will probably join the rest of the country in enjoying a day dedicated to the spirit of the working man.

Schools and government offices are expected to be closed, in honor of a holiday celebrated on the first of Monday in September.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City.

According to History.com, it became a federal holiday in 1894.

Here in Abbeville, the Wheels of Time car club has, in times past, put an exclamation point on the Labor Day weekend with a car show on the Saturday preceding Labor Day, a show typically held on Abbeville's Court Square.

This year there will be no car show, according to a source close to the event.
