County has fourth lowest number of coronavirus numbers in state

Abbeville County has the fourth lowest number of positive coronavirus cases in the state, in a comparison with the state's 46 counties, Abbeville County Director David Garner told Abbeville County Council in his County Director's report last week.

That figure still stood as of Tuesday, August 11, he said Wednesday.

Part of the low number is because the County is rural, but also because a number of County residents are wearing masks and following social distancing, and adhering to the best practices as recommended by the CDC and DHEC, Garner said.

All but one of the approximately ten county employees who had tested positive for the virus have now recovered and returned to work, Garner continued.

The County is submitting requests to the state for reimbursement for measures taken to help curb the spread of the virus: measures such as disinfecting and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) that the County has purchased for public safety personnel, and additional man-hours for covering when employees are out sick with the virus, he said.

The County has spent more than $35,000 for these measures, he continued.
