DHEC provides latest coronavirus update

Abbeville County as of the afternoon of Sunday, May 24, had 35 positive coronavirus cases, and no coronavirus-related deaths, according to DHEC figures.


Among Abbeville's neighboring counties, Anderson had 218 positive cases and eight deaths, Greenwood 82 positive cases and one death, and Laurens 58 positive cases and three deaths, while McCormick County had eight positive cases and one death.


In the state as a whole, there were 10,096 positive cases, and 435 deaths so far in the coronavirus pandemic, as of the afternoon of Sunday, May 24, DHEC reported.


South Carolina's latest pandemic figures came against a backdrop of Memorial Day weekend.


Nationally, there were reports of people flocking to the beaches for the holiday many people see as the gateway to summer.


In various places along the West Coast and the East Coast, there were scenes of people who were definitely not adhering to social distancing guidelines, and many of them were not wearing masks.
