The Abbeville County School District Board of Trustees has chosen an interim superintendent to serve the district for the coming school year -- a man with a wealth of experience as an administrator and as a coach.
Dr. Charles Mason Gary graduated from Belton Honea High School, and graduated from Lander University, and went on to get an MEd from Clemson as well as a PhD from Clemson, according to a South Carolina State Senate Resolution adopted on April 30, 2019.
He taught world history and U.S. government at B-HP and coached softball, football and he became assistant principal at Palmetto Middle School, and then accepted a position as principal at Palmetto High School.
Palmetto High School received a Palmetto Gold award, a Palmetto Silver award, a Schools of Promise award, and from the South Carolina Department of Education a Red Carpet School award.
In 2012, Gary became Superintendent in Anderson District Three, and he later became deputy superintendent for Greenville County schools, and retired from that position in 2019.
He has written two books about education.
Gary was scheduled to begin working in his new post as interim superintendent on Thursday, July 16.
Gary was selected by the Abbeville County School District Board of Trustees last week to serve as interim superintendent.
Dr. Julie Fowler, who served as superintendent roughly one year following the passing of Dr. Betty Jo Hall, is stepping down from the post.
