Belcher named assistant AD
Maggie Jameson has been named the new athletic director at Abbeville High School, with Doug Belcher named the assistant athletic director.
Assistant AHS principal Scott White had been serving as interim athletic director since Tad DuBose left AHS last year to take over as football coach at Emerald.
Jameson, a former Abbeville County School District Teacher of the Year, was announced as the new athletic director on Friday by AHS principal Dr. Adam Lanford.
Belcher was named assistant athletic director at the same time.
Jameson teaches social studies, and has been an advisor for AHS cheerleaders. She is the granddaughter of the late Red Jameson, who served many years as a coach at AHS and for whom the Panther basketball court at the AHS gym is named.
Jameson has been teaching at AHS four years. "I grew up in Ware Shoals," she said.
"I'm excited," she said, noting that she believes it will be inspiring for girl student athletes to be able to look up to a female athletic director.
She may be the first female AD in AHS history.
"I'm not sure," she said. "I just know some people said it."
Belcher, meanwhile, is the varsity boys basketball coach at AHS, and he led the Panthers to a state championship in boys basketball in 2016.
