Kickoff Classic slated for Hite Stadium Friday

The WCTel Kickoff Classic, a preseason jamboree, will be held at Hite Stadium in Abbeville beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18.

In the first segment, McCormick will face Dixie, and in the second segment Abbeville will face Strom Thurmond, according to AHS head football coach Jamie Nickles.

Calhoun Falls Charter had been scheduled to participate in the kickoff, but Nickles said Tuesday that the Flashes have dropped out.

There will be no entertainment and food on the practice field, as in the past, the coach continued.

Each game will be a 24-minute quarter, he said.

The Panthers will open up their regular season with a trip to Iva to play Crescent on Sept. 25, said Nickles, noting that the Tigers have one of the best teams they have had in years.

The coach had words of praise for his team.

"I'm just really proud of the kids," said Nickles, praising their participation and effort. "It's just a blessing to be around such great kids."

There is a tentative rain out date for the morning of Saturday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. at Hite Stadium, Nickles continued.

Greenwood, Emerald and Ninety Six had originally been scheduled to play in the jamboree, but were removed because of sanctions placed on them by the South Carolina High School League, according to published reports.

Calhoun Falls Charter dropped out because of concerns with the coronavirus, according to reports.
